GET ON TRACK is a 10 session program. Its focus is to educate youth who are at risk of entering the juvenile justice system, to increase their protective factors and decrease their risk factors. Referrals for this program come from schools, the juvenile justice system, families and other care providers.
The Get On Track curriculum attempts to meet the needs of the different participants in the group and therefore is flexible as all topics are explored.
Youth also receive intensive case management to help with other issues specific to their needs, in addition to the core curriculum. For example, youth could receive on-going monitoring of their possible use by Urine analysis random testing throughout the program.
The Black Diamond Community Center drug and alcohol counselor uses the Lakota Medicine Wheel model to work with youth in their management of life issues.
The case manager will create reports for mandated court hearings to advocate for the youth. Youth will receive assistance in attaining other services, such as mental health counseling, medical appointments, working with school staff, etc.
CURRICULUM -
The curriculum follows the Lakota Medicine Wheel. This holistic model of human development is the foundation for contemporary lifespan models. Its teachings are founded on the natural principle of the inter-connectedness of all things. It teaches us the importance of having a balance in all areas of lives, including the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. This is a visual and interactive learning tool that enhances the motivation of youth through presentations that are interesting and clear to understand. Its greatest significance is the ability to examine the areas of their lives that need changing, and look for ways to make better choices.
The Black Diamond Community has provided this important program to the youth of the greater Black Diamond Community since fall of 2001. There is no charge for this program, except for the intake interview, which is $50. We serve youth from South King County.
Jesus Garcia is a certified Chemical Dependency Specialist and has led this class since March 2005.
HOW TO APPLY - In order to enter the “Get on Track” program, youth must be referred through schools, the juvenile justice system, families or, other care providers.
